Yes that right, and some of the food we take really contribute to the destruction of this very vital organ.

Where is the Liver located?

Located on the left upper quadrant, your liver is one of the hardest working organs in your body. Your liver does some pretty important functions in your body, and it’s failure leads to some pretty bad effects. You simply cannot liver without a proper functioning liver.

What are the functions of the Liver.

Functions of the liver include;

  • An air filter.
  • A chemical detoxifier.
  • A gas tank for energy.
  • It works around the clock to make sure your body gets the nutrients.
  • removing the toxins you consume through the day and therefore protecting your body.
  • Your Liver is also responsible for making proteins that are really vital for blood clotting.

Food that harm your Liver

In today’s article, we’ll talk about foods you might be taking that are actually destroying your liver. This includes;

  • Alcohol
  • Raisins
  • Canned foods
  • Red meat and so much more

Fried Foods

Number one on our list are fried foods. Your liver’s main function is to break down nutrients, these nutrients are obtained from the food you take in through your mouth. When you overloaded with fats, your liver strains to break down the fats. This is actually very bad for your liver.

High protein foods and other high fat items can cause fatty liver, and therefore it is best to avoid them for the most part. The extra fat can cause swelling and scarring of the Liver which will permanently damage the organ’s ability to filter nutrients, as an alternative to frying food, consider sorting it and heavy fats, such as coconut oil or broiling them in the oven to get them good and crispy. Alcohol

This may be the most obvious one on our list. Your liver typically processes one standard drink or about 10 to 15 grammes of alcohol in an hour’s time. Therefore, if you take in more amounts than this, you will be increasing the risk of your liver developing fat deposits – Alcoholic fatty liver disease. The symptoms may not be obvious. Only a doctor can detect it through blood tests or biopsy.

Alcohol can also speed up the progression of pre existing liver disease, one function of your liver is to metabolize alcohol. So if you have liver damage and continue to drink, your liver will not metabolize alcohol effectively, leading to even more liver damage. If excessive drinking continues fatty liver disease can progress into more complications like alcoholic hepatitis, and cirrhosis.

Packaged snack foods.

Next time you are tempted to eat packaged food, reach for that healthy snack instead. The problem with chips and baked foods, is that they’re always typically loaded with sugar, salt and fat.

Eating foods high in sodium can lead to retention of fluid in your liver ,slow down its function. Many processed foods contain what we call trans fatty acids, and these can be really bad for your liver as they lead to fibrosis (formation of scar tissue on your Liver). This causes scar tissue to take the place of damaged liver cells fibrosis can cause serious complications like cirrhosis or even cancer of the liver.

Raisins.

Although raisins have been proven to be healthy for your body, eating too many is not good. As we all now, anything in good amounts is good, and too much of anything is bad.

Red meat

Meat, and more specifically red meat can do more harm than good to your liver, especially if you’re suffering from a serious liver disease like, cirrhosis or hepatitis. It comes with a lot of red flags, for example, it has a lot of  saturated fats. These can gradually lead to non – alcoholic liver disease.

Red meat has a lot of complex proteins and fats, this puts a lot of strain during its metabolism. One study found that overweight people who consume a lot of animal protein are at a higher risk of fatty livers and those who don’t.

Fructose Rich Foods

Fructose foods that contain high amounts of sugar like raisins and juice may be tasty, but they don’t do your liver any favors fructose simply doesn’t break down in your body like other sugars. In fact, too much sugar can cause dyslipidemia or abnormal amounts of fat in the blood. According to scientists,  fructose has been studied and scientists believe there is  close connection to fatty liver and inflammation, small amounts of fruit are good to eat but too much can be a problem.

Sodas tend to be full of high fructose corn syrup. This is one of the worst substances you can expose your poor liver to even if soda is made with sugar, it’s bad. Another function your liver performs is converting sugar to fat too much of any type of sweetener and your liver will be producing too much. Excessive fat leads to fatty liver disease, which is really dangerous and only leads to further complications.
