What is Mara Moja?
Mara Moja is a drug used in Kenya for pain relief. It has both antipyretic and analgesic effects which make it a very good drug. It can be bought OTC(Over-The-Counter) in Kenya for as little as Ksh. 15.
The term over-the-counter means that the drug can be self-administered and therefore allowed by the Ministry of Health to be sold without a prescription. The drug is also sold at local kiosks at the same price.

How Mara Moja Works (Mode Of Action)
Just to make it simple and easy for you, your body synthesizes something called prostaglandins. These prostaglandins are important in a process called inflammation, which is responsible for inflammatory processes in the body, for example, when you get injured, inflammation causes pain, hotness, swelling, redness and even swelling.
The synthesis of prostaglandins requires the presence of the enzyme Cyclooxygenase. Therefore, inhibiting this enzyme will lead to decreased production of prostaglandins. Mara Moja works by inhibiting the production of this prostaglandin and also acting on the brain to elevate the pain threshold of the body.
This will reduce the amount of pain and the signs of inflammation. It will also reduce the body’s temperature, in terms of fever(Antipyretic effect)
Please note that inflammation is a very important feature, and because of this Mara Moja does not aim at stopping it, only making you less sensitive to the pain and reducing your body temperature.
The component that makes this possible is Paracetamol, which is one of the key ingredients in the drug.

Indications for using Mara Moja.
Mara Moja can be used in various conditions like colds and flu, and headaches. It can also be useful when you have a toothache and for ladies when they have menstrual discomfort. It is also good for reducing fever, but always remember that you always have to seek medical advice to treat the underlying cause of the fever you are experiencing.
What are the ingredients in Mara Moja Tablets(Mara Moja Contents)?
Let us take a look at the content of each Mara Moja tablet. Each Mara Moja tablet has 3 very important components; Aspirin, paracetamol and caffeine. Each of these ingredients has an important role and they all work together to produce the desired effect.
Caffeine which is in low doses works in the central nervous system and has a positive effect on aspirin and paracetamol thus increasing their effects. The amount of aspirin in the drug is 400mg, while paracetamol and caffeine are 200mg and 50mg respectively.
The Dosage for Mara Moja Tablets.
- For adults, the recommended intake is one or two Maramoja tablets thrice a day. To simplify this, an adult should take 1 to 2 Mara Moja tablets every 3 – 4 hours a day. but do not exceed 8 tablets in a day.
Side effects of the drug.
Like any drug, this drug has possible side effects. the common ones being;
- Stomach aches.
- Nausea and vomiting.
- Heartburn.
If the side effects are worse, seek medical advice from your nearest hospital.
Mara Moja should also be avoided in children under the age of 12 years. This is because it causes Reyes syndrome. Seek medical advice on what medication to give these children because of the side effects of Aspirin in children.
Individuals with other conditions, like liver failure, should always consult with their doctor before taking the drug because it could make the condition worse. Even pregnant mothers should know which drugs to avoid during pregnancy. If your symptom persists even after using the drug, always visit a doctor for further evaluation.
