If you have ever had heartburn in your life, then you know how bad it is. In a simple explanation, heartburn occurs when the acid content moves back into your “food pipe”, or also known medically as the esophagus. This occurs when the muscles that prevent this become weak.
There are things we do that lead to heartburns these include taking food that is spicy, smoking, and alcohol intake. Alcohol particularly is a well-known culprit because its effects weaken the sphincter muscles of the stomach.
Reducing symptoms of heartburn entails the use of antiacid medication. Your medical practitioner might prescribe other medications that will help in lowering the amount of hydrochloric acid produced by your stomach.
Some other tips include eating at least 2 – 3 hours after a meal. The purpose of this is to ensure that by the time you retire to bed, food will have been pushed down the stomach towards your small intestines.
Also, ensure that you at least have a pillow or two to elevate your body. Gravity will then do its work of pushing everything down instead of up.
